Government Intensifies Electrification of Rural Liberia; As GoL, EU Break Ground for Electricity Facilities for Buchanan and Greenville Cities

The Government of Liberia will tomorrow make significant stride in its electrification expansion efforts as GoL and European Union breaks ground tomorrow May 3, electricity generation and distribution facilities.
The project is intended for the construction of two separate 33KV electricity distribution networks in the cities of Buchanan and Greenville, respectively.

The networks when completed will provide the much-needed access to reliable and affordable electricity to the residents of Buchanan and Greenville cities respectively.

These projects are being funded by the European Union under its ‘Rural Electrification Program, which prioritizes the South East of Liberia (No LR/FED/040-034).

In the city of Buchanan about twelve thousand and fifty-four (12,054) customers will be connected on both single and three-phase pre-paid meters, while the city will also benefit from the installation of an estimated eight hundred and twenty- five (825) led streetlights.

Furthermore in Greenville City, four thousand three hundred and forty-four (4,344) households will be connected as part of the project.

Additionally, along the forty-three (43) kilometer route of said transmission line from the two (2) megawatts, a Mini Hydro Power Plant will be constructed on the Sinoe River, while about two hundred (200) led streetlights will be installed in that Southeastern city.

The Honorable Minister of Finance and Development Planning, Hon. Boima S. Kamara, will represent the government of Liberia at tomorrow’s groundbreaking ceremony, while the European Union Head of Delegation to Liberia, Nona Deprez, will represent the EU.
