Monrovia, Liberia - The Government of Liberia has announced that no central government employee earning below the US$150 minimum monthly salary threshold, as stipulated by the Decent Work Act of 2015, will receive less than US$150 in gross monthly compensation beginning next year.
President Joseph Nyuma Boakai has authorized the allocation of more than sixteen million US dollars to fund the first set of measures in a multi-year effort aimed at addressing some of the remuneration concerns and challenges in the public sector.
In a landmark address to the public at MICAT Special Press Briefing Tuesday, the Minister of Finance and Development Planning, Hon. Augustine Kpehe Ngafuan, outlined that as part of broader pay adjustments, approximately 28,200 government workers—representing 45% of the workforce—will receive salary top-ups.
“Nurses, midwives, and physician assistants will receive US$50 monthly salary increases, while other health workers will see increases ranging from US$25 to US$40, based on their roles.”
He said: “Additional workers in the agriculture and security sectors, including AFL soldiers, police officers, and agriculture extension workers, will also benefit from salary increases of between US$30 and US$40 per month."
Minister Ngafuan disclosed that the Ministry of Finance has allocated US$2.6 million in the FY 2025 budget to begin addressing the longstanding issue of volunteer workers in the Ministries of Health and Education.
“This funding will initiate a multi-year process to incorporate these workers into the payroll following a rigorous vetting exercise.”
According to the Finance and Development Planning Minister, nearly 2,000 teachers with C-Certificates, B-Certificates, and higher qualifications (Associate and Bachelor’s degrees) will receive salary adjustments to ensure they are paid in accordance with their professional qualifications.
“A nearly US$3 million allocation in the draft budget will cover these adjustments, benefiting educators currently earning below their respective pay grades,” Ngafuan averred.
In a bid to support the health sector, Ngafuan said the draft FY 2025 budget includes nearly US$3 million to provide specialist doctors with a salary increase of at least US$225 per month, starting in January 2025.
“This increase is part of the government’s broader efforts to regularize pay for specialists in the health sector.”
The Finance and Development Planning Minister also disclosed that the Government of Liberia will begin implementing the National Security Act of 2015 by providing insurance coverage for all active-duty members of the Liberia National Police.
“This initiative, set to take effect in January 2025, will provide over 5,000 police officers with fully funded insurance coverage, offering much-needed support to these dedicated individuals who serve on the front lines of national security.”
